Biographical Note

A naturalist and conservationist by avocation, Attwater was a recognized authority on Texas birds. He was born and educated in England, emigrating to Canada and then to the United States around 1890. In 1900, as an employee of the Southern Pacific Company, he came to Houston where he lived the remainder of his life. He collected specimens of Texas fauna and flora and authored several works based on his research and observations.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence and field notes reflect Attwater's knowledge and concern for Texas birds and their protection by state and federal game laws. Records include Notes on Simmons' Birds of Austin Area and a book of Egg Records, 1884. The South Texas Bird Notes is a notebook concerning the study of birds in Bexar, Arkansas, and Kerr counties during the 1890s.
