While on leave in Arkansas in 1945, he met Edna Ward O’Hair, a young widow whose husband had been killed in action. They were married six months later, in December 1945. In the early 1950s, Toland took a position in England training Royal Air Force pilots before moving to Arlington, Virginia. In 1960, he took a position as attaché in Saigon.
