A Guide to the James McNutt Umstattd Papers
James McNutt Umstattd was born in 1922 and served during WWII as first lieutenant and B-17 navigator with the 546th Bombardment Squadron, 384th Bombardment Group. He flew 32 combat missions over Europe, spanning from April 19, to September 13, 1944. After his service he entered law school at the University of Texas and became an attorney. He later served as a captain of the JAG Corps during the Korean War. He died in 1988.
Transcribed excerpts from the flight logs of Lt. Umstattd, annotated by his son-in-law, Dr. William Ramer Smith. Includes maps of two mission flight plans. All material is photocopied or transcribed; the collection contains no original documents from 1944.
