Biographical Note

Anne Charlene Miller was born on April 10, 1902 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Charles H. Miller, an engineer from Pennsylvania who established with his family in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1911. Her grandparents, Henry Bartholomew and Elizabeth Bartholomew Herr, who had married in 1865, belonged to the Mennonite community of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Charlene attended the Teacher’s College in Columbia University, New York, between 1919 and 1921, where she married Edgar Allen O’Hair (1894-1955) in 1921. The couple had two daughters and one son. Charlene died on May 1985 in San Antonio, Texas.

Edna Ward O’Hair, the eldest daughter, was born on September 9, 1921 in Louisville, Kentucky. Her first husband died during World War II. She married for the second time to Butler Toland in 1945. Edna and Butler had two daughters.

Genealogy charts, family records, oral histories, articles and clippings, photographs, correspondence, publications, and ephemera form the Charlene Miller and Edna Toland Collection, 1769-1775,1850-2014, that documents the research on the Ward, Gillespie, O’Hair, Herr, Miller, Kennedy, Toland, Young, and Bryan families performed by Edna Toland with the help of her mother Charlene Miller. The collection includes transcriptions of Civil War correspondence and oral history, Confederate dollars, land grants transcriptions, deeds, wills and estate documents. The correspondence deals mainly with family research issues. The family photographs include 4 ambrotypes.
