Historical Note

The Institute for the Humanities at Salado was founded by Harry Wilmer in 1980 to serve as a non-academic environment for participants to discuss a range of humanities topics. Wilmer had previously worked with the International Film Festivals at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, and the Institute served as an outgrowth of his activities with the Festivals. Lectures at the Institute began in April of 1981, with a speaker series featuring four professors. The speaker series continued, with sessions in the spring and fall, and addressed topics including creativity, mythology, medicine, understanding evil, dreams, and literature.
