Historical Note

As a center within the Division of Continuing Education, the UT Distance Education Center (today the K-16 Education Center) began serving the community in 1909 after the creation of the UT Extension Division (today the Division of Continuing Education). The program, like all of the programs under the Division of Continuing Education, provides open-enrollment credit and noncredit courses, professional development, specialized training, personal enrichment, and many other options for students of all ages and all walks of life.

The UT Distance Education Center offers a number of programs for its students. Some of the programs are GED testing, high school correspondence courses, migrant student programs, Online Mathematics and Science Initiative through ASKME ®, and Language Learners at the UT Center for Hispanic Achievement (LUCHA™).
