Biographical Note

Marian B. Davis (1911-2000) was born in St. Louis and earned a bachelor's degree at the Washington University in St. Louis 1932. She went on to complete a master's in art history from Washington University and her Ph.D. at Harvard in 1948. Davis worked at the Worcester Art Museum from 1941-1944 before taking a position as Assistant Professor at the University of Texas in 1945. Davis was instrumental in the development of the art history program at UT, first developing the bachelor program in the 1950s, then the master's program in 1963; a doctoral program followed in the 1970s. Davis also participated in the development of the Visual Resources Collection and spent time as the chief curator of the Art Museum, now known as the Blanton Museum of Art. After retiring in 1978, Davis was involved with the Austin History Center and the Austin-Travis County collection. Marian Davis passed away on October 26, 2000.
