Biographical/Historical Note

Elisha Roberts was born in Tennessee in 1774. He married Martha Gill in 1800 and they had nine children. He moved his family to Kentucky in 1811 and served in the War of 1812 as a lieutenant and quartermaster in Louisiana. He finally settled alongside the Ayish Bayou of East Texas in 1821, and was elected alcade in 1831. He was also an elected delegate to the convention in San Philipe in 1833, and was one of fifteen men selected to choose the townsite location for San Augustine. Roberts died in 1844.

Scope and Contents

The Elisha Roberts Papers are comprised of photocopies of documents regarding Elisha Roberts’ personal and professional affairs. These documents include a marriage bond, drawings of the family residences and gravesite, and copies of his and his father, George Roberts’ wills, as well as photocopies of census and voting material and a muster roll. This collection also includes photocopies of photographs of his daughter Mahala Roberts Sharp Hall and her second husband Joshua Hall, as well as a photocopy of two photographs Elisha and Martha’s home.
