Biographical Note

Henry Andreas (H.A.) Breihan, born in 1856 in Upen, Hannover, arrived to Texas with his family in 1859 and settled in Austin County. In 1881, H.A. Breihan married Sophie DeVilbis Muenzler, from Industry, Texas, whose family had also emigrated from Germany in 1847. H.A. was a licensed exhorter in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and lived in Industry and Bartlett, where he stayed until his death in 1927. The family had five sons and three daughters.

The oldest son, Ben E. Breihan (1881-1972), became a minister in the First Methodist Church in Kerrville, Texas. Second son, Ernest Winfred Breihan (1883-1976) obtained his bachelor and master’s degrees in Medicine from the University of Texas at Austin. During World War I, Dr. Breihan served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps in France. The family had three more sons, Frederick, Edwin and Albert, and three daughters, Nellie, Laura and Olga.

Scope and Contents

The Breihan Family History Collection, 1838, 1870-2013, consists of papers relating to the history of the Breihan family of Austin County, Texas, who immigrated to Texas from Germany in mid nineteenth century. The papers also reflect the genealogical research on the Muenzler Family, who also arrived to Texas from Germany around the same period. In addition, the collection includes a number of personal papers belonging to Rev. Ben E. Breihan, his son Rev. Bob Breihan, and Dr. Ernest Winfred Breihan, some legal records, clippings, notebooks, publications and memorabilia. The collection also includes a large number of family photographs spanning from the early twentieth century to late nineties.
