Hisotrical Note

Alan Reed, Emeritus Professor at the University of New Mexico, was the executive secretary for the Texas Citizens for McCarthy during the Democratic Party presidential primaries of 1968. McCarthy’s campaign had a strong anti-war component appealing to youth and dissatisfied citizens tired of the establishment. Although McCarthy had won a plurality of the primary vote, U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey held the lead among the delegates and won the nomination of the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
