Historical Note

Between 1907 and 1914, Galveston, Texas, became the designated port of entry for Jewish immigration in the United States. This program, directed by the Jewish Immigrants’ Information Bureau, was aimed to prevent an anticipated wave of anti-Semitism on the Eastern seaboard, which might lead to immigration restrictions. Several Jewish organizations in America and Europe collaborated during this period of eight years in which a number of 10,000 immigrants were received in Galveston.
