Biographical Note

Photojournalist John Bryson was born in 1923 in Brownwood, Texas. After serving in World War II in the Army Air Force, Bryson enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was the editor of the university magazine, the Texas Ranger. After graduating from the university, Bryson worked for Life magazine as a correspondent, bureau chief and picture editor, later becoming a freelance photojournalist for Life, Look, Holiday, and other publications. Books with Bryson’s images include The World of Armand Hammer (1985) and The Private World of Katherine Hepburn (1992). He died in Brookings, Oregon, in 2005.

Scope and Contents

Ranging in date from circa 1945 to 1995, the John Bryson Archive consists of photographs, screenplays, tear sheets, correspondence and manuscript materials from the career of photographer John Bryson. The archive includes Bryson’s photographs of many notable Hollywood stars, filmmakers, politicians and writers, including Sylvester Stallone, David Frost, Frank Sinatra, Clint Eastwood, John Huston, Norman Mailer and Fidel Castro. The archive also includes images that Bryson made on the sets of Hollywood films, including Ben Hur, Convoy, and King Kong. A small amount of personal photography and correspondence is additionally included.
