Abstract: The photograph album “Scenes in and Around Austin, Texas,” dated 1925-1927, was created by John Wayne Courter, an engineering undergraduate student at UT Austin in the 1920s. Courter was an avid photographer and photographed many of the images in the album. Most photographs show buildings on the University of Texas campus, including Samson Hall, Lubbock Hall, the Main Building, Main Walk (UT’s West Mall), Garrison Hall under construction, the Library Building (Battle Hall), Seminary Court, the Education, Biology, Law and Engineering Buildings, the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house, Memorial Stadium, Penick Tennis Courts, Kirby Hall and the Scottish Rite Dormitory. The album additionally includes views of UT and Congress Avenue from the Capitol, Congress Avenue from the Capitol, and views of Austin and Lake Austin from Mount Bonnell.

Biographical Note

John Wayne Courter studied engineering at the University of Texas at Austin as an undergraduate student during the 1920s, graduating in 1928. He died in Austin in September 1967.

Scope and Contents

The photograph album “Scenes in and Around Austin, Texas,” dated 1925-1927, was created by John Wayne Courter, an engineering undergraduate student at UT Austin in the 1920s. Courter was an avid photographer and photographed many of the images in the album. Most photographs show buildings on the University of Texas campus, including Samson Hall, Lubbock Hall, the Main Building, Main Walk (UT’s West Mall), Garrison Hall under construction, the Library Building (Battle Hall), Seminary Court, the Education, Biology, Law and Engineering Buildings, the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house, Memorial Stadium, Penick Tennis Courts, Kirby Hall and the Scottish Rite Dormitory. Several photographs show the campus after a large snowfall in January 1926. The album additionally includes views of UT and Congress Avenue from the Capitol, Congress Avenue from the Capitol, and views of Austin and Lake Austin from Mount Bonnell. The album also includes a newspaper article about UT’s planned expansion, “Architects Dream of the Greater University of the Future,” dated November 1925.
