A Guide to the Marie Seefeld Baughman Memorial Collection, circa 1910-1975
J. L. Baughman had a career as a feature writer for several Texas newspapers, including the Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star Telegram and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
The Marie Seefeld Baughman Memorial Collection was accumulated over four decades from various sources during J. L. Baughman’s career as a feature writer for several Texas newspapers. Collection material includes approximately 2,500 photographic prints and 12,500 film negatives, as well as newspaper and magazine clippings, catalog cards and photocopies of original documents. Approximately half of the collection relates to Texas history, including military forts, rivers, shipyards, bridges, Western art, architecture, geography and wildlife. Other subject matter includes promotional materials for locations including Virginia, Florida, Massachusetts and Central America. Collection photographers include J. L. Baughman and Jack Blackwell. Provenance for the originals of copied source material in the collection includes the U.S. Archives; the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News; the U.S. Navy; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Florida State News Bureau; the Virginia Chamber of Commerce; the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission; the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service.
