A Guide to the UT Traffic and Security Services Chief Allen R. Hamilton Records, circa 1950s, 1960s
Allen R. Hamilton, University of Texas campus chief of police from the late 1950s through the 1960s, was raised in Austin, Texas. Hamilton worked as a page in the Texas Legislature in the early 1930s and attended Texas Wesleyan University at its Austin satellite campus in 1934. During Work War II, Hamilton served with the U.S. Corps of Engineers.
In 1947, he was hired onto the staff of the University of Texas Traffic and Security Services (TSS). After five years as a patrolman, he was promoted to sergeant, then lieutenant, and finally Chief of Traffic and Security in 1955. In 1968, TSS became the UT Police Department. Hamilton continued to serve as chief until 1970, when he was promoted to a position in security services planning for the UT System.

Records consist of original black and white photographic prints of campus anti-war protesters from the personal files of former University of Texas Chief of Traffic and Security Services Allen Hamilton. Photographs depict members of the Students for a Democratic Society UT chapter, including Alice Embree, Thorne Dreyer, Robert Pardun, and others. Many of the prints are apparently surveillance photos of students outside the Catholic Student Center. Photos also depict protests for integration and against the Vietnam War, as well as "Gentle Thursday" happenings.
The photographs were collected by the UT Office of Traffic and Security Services during the 1960s. The records also include images of UT police staff, equipment, and vehicles, as well as several mug shots.
Original and copied documents from former University of Texas Chief of Traffic and Security Services Allen Hamilton’s personal files. All of the items are part of Hamilton’s report and investigation of the Charles Whitman tower sniper shooting, which occurred on August 1, 1966.
Included are crime scene reports, injury and fatality reports, eyewitness accounts, UT records pertaining to Whitman, photos of victims taken in the morgue, and copies of Whitman’s personal writings and diaries.
