Biographical Note

Over a forty-year period, George Tames (1919-1994) photographed ten presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George H. W. Bush, many members of Congress, and statesmen from Churchill to Khrushchev. His career in news photography began in Washington, D.C., accompanying Capitol Hill photographers on assignments. From 1939 to 1945, he worked for Time magazine and then joined the New York Times, becoming chief photographer for its Washington Bureau, a position he held until 1985. His book, Eye on Washington: Presidents Who Have Known Me was published in 1990.

Scope and Contents

The George Tames Photographic Archive consists primarily of the photographic print files and exhibit prints of George Tames, a photographer for The New York Times from 1945 until 1985. Subjects include the American presidency from Franklin Roosevelt to George H. W. Bush, Congress and politics, and scenic features and monuments. Additionally included are a small selection of negatives and transparencies, multimedia, and manuscript materials.

Notable politicians and leaders featured in the archive include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Winston Churchill, Nikita Khrushchev, Bob Dole, Robert Kennedy, Edward Kennedy, Tip O’Neill, Walter Mondale, Alan Greenspan, George Meany, Sam Rayburn, Phil Gramm, Joseph McCarthy, and Hubert Humphrey. Other subjects include various members of the U.S. Congress and Washington sites, including the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, the U.S. Capitol building, and Arlington Cemetery.
