Historical Note

Austin City Limits is an award-winning American music television program. First airing in 1974, it has become one of the longest-running shows of its kind in history. Every episode is recorded live in Austin, Texas and broadcast across the country on many PBS stations. The original mission of the show was to celebrate the unique music of Texas, such as the outlaw country of Willie Nelson and his contemporaries. The scope of the program has grown wider and more eclectic over the years, but it still maintains a strong regional theme, with performers drawing inspiration from the many diverse musical traditions of the South. Texas blues, western swing, Tejano music, progressive country, jazz, bluegrass, alternative rock, folk music, and rock and roll have all been popularly featured genres. Published in 1987 by the University of Texas Press, Austin City Limits by Clifford Endres is a book that recounts the story of the first eleven seasons of the titular show.
