Historical Note

At the turn of the twentieth century, the Texas legislature began subsidizing the development of industrial arts education programs. Industrial education was taught formally at the University of Texas at Austin as early as 1914, when O.A. Hanszen was appointed adjunct professor of manual training. Manual training was geared towards both vocational preparation and general education. Later known as the Industrial Education Department (IED), the department operated out of the UT Division of Continuing Education & Extension and offered staff and professional development training. Credit for training courses was awarded as Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Around 1999, UT IED Training & Development was merged with the Thompson Conference Center’s professional development programs to form the UT Professional Development Center.
