Historical Note

The College of Education at the University of Texas was founded in 1891 as the School of Pedagogy. Dr. Joseph Baldwin, then principal of the Sam Houston Normal Institute, was appointed sole professor of the School. The School was suspended for the 1896-1897 academic year and then reestablished the following year with two additional faculty members, William Seneca Sutton and Alexander Caswell Ellis. The department provided instruction for future educators and studied issues of the educational field.

In 1900, the school was renamed the School of the Science and Art of Education. In 1905, the School was expanded into a department of four schools: the School of Educational Administration, the School of the Philosophy of Education, the School of the Art of Teaching, and the School of the History of Education.

The College presently oversees undergraduate and graduate courses of study in curriculum and instruction, educational administration, educational psychology, special education, foreign language education, science and mathematics education, and kinesiology and health education.
