Historical Note

The Bureau of Cotton Economic Research, also called the Cotton Economic Research Center, was established in 1945 by professor of marketing at the University of Texas, Alonzo B. Cox. The bureau conducted research on cotton marketing and merchandising. In 1947, the bureau evolved into the Natural Fibers Information Center, which served as a source of publications related to the cotton, wool, mohair, and oilseed industries of Texas until its closure in 2007.

Scope and Contents

The UT Bureau of Cotton Economic Research Records contains pamphlets, books, periodicals, and reports that relate to the organization’s research on cotton from 1892 to 1964. Materials show the results of research on the use of cotton in manufacturing, the types of cotton best suited for various uses, and the methods and results of yarns and fiber processing experiments. The records also contain periodicals concerning international cotton price statistics, market outlets, and production and distribution.

Some records relate to subjects other than cotton research, such as the cattle industry, churches and schools in agricultural areas, farm finances, agriculture in Denmark, national resources, and potato and onion futures for 1955.
