Biographical Note

Ira Polk Hildebrand was born on December 19, 1876 in La Grange, Texas. He received a B.A. degree at Texas Christian University in 1897 and B.A. and LL.B. degrees at the University of Texas in 1899. In 1902, he earned an addition LL.B. at Harvard University. He was admitted to the Texas bar in 1902 and began practice in partnership with T.D. Cobbs in San Antonio.

In 1907, Hildebrand became an associate law professor at the University of Texas. In 1922, he co-founded the Texas Law Review with fellow UT faculty. He served as dean of the UT School of Law from 1924 to 1940, during which time he effected changes to the curriculum and established a legal aid clinic.

Hildebrand authored Select Cases and Other Authorities on the Law of Private Corporations with E. H. Warren in 1912, Restatement of the Law of Contracts as Adopted and Promulgated by the American Law Institute Containing Texas Annotations in 1933, and the four-volume Law of Texas Corporations in 1942.

He was a member of the Masons, Shriners, the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, the American Law Institute, the Association of American Law Schools, and the Texas Civil Judicial Council.

Hildebrand died on November 11, 1944.

Scope and Contents

The Ira Polk Hildebrand Papers contain term papers, correspondence, bills, receipts, checks, reports, account books, photographs, and certificates from 1913 to 1949, which relate to Hildebrand’s curriculum for the University of Texas School of Law, as well as his investment in the Southern States Property and Holding Company.

The first series consists of papers from legislative seminars, international organization classes, international law classes, and legal writing classes, in addition to the notes of Professor Percy D. Williams. The second series is related to the Southern States Property and Holding Co. and includes company correspondence, financial papers, bond and loan series, bank records, auditor’s reports, tax records, and other office documents. Hildebrand was a stockholder in this company, and therefore some of the correspondence and papers relate to him.
