A Guide to the Business Ledgers, 1871-1889
Three unidentified business ledgers include:
1) Cashbook of a business in Vicksburg (?), Mississippi (1871-1873), many of which are payments to steamboats. Reoccurring names in the ledger include J. J. Cowan, W. B. King, O. H. Perry, George Barnes, and Sam Barfield.
2) Ledger with alphabetical index containing accounts for business transactions with a store in Mississippi (1876-1886). Accounts list purchasers, items purchased, quantities, and prices.
3) Ledger recording accounts with businesses and individuals in the Mississippi River valley, from Arkansas City in the north to Natchez in the south (1883-1889). Entries include purchasers and merchandise. Although the front flyleaf is annotated: “probably F. M. McRae’s book,” the ledger lists McRae as one of this business’s accounts.
