Biographical Note

Ted Powers entered the journalism field at a young age, working as copy boy for the Kansas City Star then joining the Associated Press (AP) in November 1938. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, surviving the battle of Iwo Jima. After the war, Powers returned to journalism, photographing U.S. presidents, natural disasters including the Texas City explosion, and sporting events for the Dallas and Austin AP bureaus. Mr. Powers retired in 1986 and died in Austin, Texas, on February 22, 2005, at the age of 83.

Scope and Contents

Ranging in date from circa 1940 to 2004, the Ted Powers Photographic Archives consists of approximately 150 photographic prints and 60 film negatives photographed by Associated Press photographer Ted Powers. The photographs’ subjects include U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush; politicians (both Texas and national) including Edward Kennedy, John Nance Garner, Barbara Jordan, Hubert Humphrey, Henry Gonzalez, William Hobby, Ann Richards, Dolph Briscoe, Bill Clements and John Connally; newsworthy events such as a flood, a Juneteenth celebration, and a civil rights demonstration; and sports figures such as Darrell Royal. The archive additionally includes photographs of Powers and three lithographs showing the University of Texas and a battle scene, presumably collected by Powers.
