Biographical Note

David Kingsley Brace was born on September 4, 1891 in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1915, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Brace taught physical education in Oregon junior high schools from 1915 to 1916 and served abroad as the Director of several physical education programs in China from 1917 to 1920. Brace returned to the United States to earn a master’s degree from the Teacher’s College at Columbia University in 1921 and a Ph.D. from Columbia in 1927.

In 1926, Brace joined the University of Texas at Austin and established the Department of Physical and Health Education. He served as the Department’s chairman from 1926 to 1958 and retired from teaching in 1962.

Brace was widely published. He was the author of or contributor to ten books and over 100 articles. His research was concerned with the development of motor ability tests and athletic skills/techniques tests.

He was also a consultant to the U.S. Office of Education and the Committee on Physical Fitness (Federal Security Agency) and actively participated in many professional organizations. He was a member of the Austin Parks and Recreation Board from 1955 to 1968, and served as chairman from 1957 to 1964.

He was married to Dorothy Walton on December 25, 1915, in Portland, Oregon. After her death in 1935 he married Mary Elizabeth Bulbrook, on July 12, 1936, in Fort Worth; they had two daughters. Brace died in Austin, Texas on December 27, 1971.
