Historical Note

The University of Texas at Austin chapter of Theta Sigma Phi, a national women’s journalism organization, was established by students in 1929. A local Austin professional chapter was later formed as students entered the workforce. The national Theta Sigma Phi headquarters was established in Austin, Texas in 1964.

In the 1980s, Theta Sigma Phi changed its name to Women in Communications, Inc., and later to the Association for Women in Communications (AWC). In 1997, the AWC independently incorporated as a 501 (c3). The Austin chapter became the largest in the AWC.

In 2013, the affiliation between what had been the Austin chapter of AWC and the national organization was discontinued, and Women Communicators of Austin was established as an independent entity.
