Historical Note

The University of Texas Spooks, today known as the Texas Spirits, were established in 1941 by Grace Doss and Wanda Lee Turner as a school pride and spirit organization for the university community. "The name Texas Spooks was originally chosen to reflect the organization's secrecy. The 30-member organization would secretly meet in restaurants and sorority houses dressed in the ‘ghostly garb’ of hoods, masks, and sheets. The members would light red candles and sing to the football players in order to ‘spook’ away any bad luck."

The group became best known for painting the windows of local businesses on the Drag to advertise university and athletic events. In 1993, the organization was renamed the Texas Spirits.
