Historical Note

The University of Texas Rusk Literary Society was founded by two law students on October 5, 1883, shortly after the University itself was established. Yancey Lewis and James Robert Hamilton both wanted to be president of the organization, and so split off into two factions. The Lewisites gained the temporary chairmanship and formed the Athenaeum Literary Society, while the Hamiltonites formed the Rusk Literary Society. The Society first met at the site of the temporary capitol before being assigned a room on the third floor of the old Main Building. Members discussed topics such as politics, foreign policy, economics, law, and education.

Prominent alumni of the organization include U.S. Senators Morris Shepard and Ralph W. Yarborough, Governor Pat Neff, and musicologist John Lomax, among others.
