Historical Note

The University of Texas Memorabilia Collection was begun by H.Y. (Harry Yandell) Benedict, University President from 1927 to 1937, for the purpose of documenting his projected history of the University. It was continued after his death in 1937 by Florence Backstrom Riebold in the office of the Secretary to the Board of Regents and donated to the University Archives in 1945.

Scope and Contents

The UT Memorabilia Collection contains periodicals, minutes, reports, subject files, event programs, and photographs relating to the University of Texas from its founding in 1883 to 1945.

Print material from the Daily Texan, the Alcalde, and other university publications includes biographical information on administrative and teaching staff, students, Regents, and founders.

The collection also contains material on faculty organizations such as the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), University Club, Fortnightly Club, as well as material on faculty honors, memorials, funerals, and resignations.

Furthermore, the collection includes reports and other materials on student organizations, activities, and expenses, in addition to material on the Ex-Students Association, biographical items on Ex-Students (honors and prizes), and files on various reunions and the Round-Up from 1930-1943.

The collection also has material on institutional topics including the regional subdivisions of the University, the various schools, the Library, the Institutes, and physical plants and buildings. It also includes records on executive and administrational matters, legislative matters, and a file on the Ferguson Controversy.

Finally, the collection has a bibliographical component that covers publications, the reports of the Regents, faculty, the Auditor, the minutes of various groups, catalogs, various University publications of regular and irregular issues (a biographical index to the Daily Texan is included), faculty writings, books and articles, advertising, and statistics. There are also programs from lectures and concerts, files on World War I and World War II, photographs, items on general University history and publicity, and a file of Commencement programs from 1886 to 1945.
