Historical Note

The University of Texas Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music functions under the College of Fine Arts to offer music instruction and degrees, including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts.

The Department of Music was established at UT in 1911. The department was eliminated by Governor "Ma" Ferguson in the 1920s and later revived in 1938 with the formation of the College of Fine Arts under Dr. E. William Doty.

In 1994, the Department became known as the School of Music and in 2008 it was named in honor of philanthropists Sarah and Ernest Butler.
