Biographical Note

Sidney Monas was born on September 15, 1924 in New York, NY. Monas served in the US Army during World War II. He was captured and held as a prisoner-of-war for five months by the German army.

After the war, Monas received a bachelor’s degree in Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1948. He then attended Harvard University, where he received a master’s degree in 1951 and a Ph.D. in History in 1955.

From 1955 to 1957, he taught history at Amherst College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was an Assistant Professor of History at Smith College from 1957 to 1962. From 1962 to 1969, Monas acted as a professor of History and Foreign/Comparative Literature at the University of Rochester, as well as the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History. During this time, he also traveled to Hebrew University in Jerusalem as a visiting Fulbright professor of Russian History from 1966 to 1967.

Monas joined the University of Texas at Austin in 1969 as a professor with a joint appointment in the Departments of History and Slavic Languages. He served as the chairman of Slavic Languages from 1969 to 1975. Monas helped to develop the British Studies seminar at UT.

Monas served as the editor of the Slavic Review from 1985 to 1991.

Monas is the author of The Third Section: Police and Society in Russia under Nicholas I (1961). He has been a reviewer, editor, and translator of Russian works in history and literature, perhaps most famously the 1966 Signet Books translation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.

Monas today holds the title of Professor Emeritus for the UT Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies, the Department of History, and the Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies.

Scope and Contents

The Sidney Monas Papers document the academic career of UT Professor Emeritus of History and Slavic Languages primarily from 1960 to 1990 through printed materials like academic journal articles and copies of book chapters, professional correspondence, manuscripts, notes, course material, several photographs, three 3.5" floppy disks, and an audiocassette.

The papers contain both unedited and copyedited manuscript drafts of works by Monas or his students (though some are untitled or of unclear authorship), in addition to published print versions of Monas’ essays and reviews. These documents reflect Monas’ study and/or translation of Russian creative works such as Osip Mandelstam’s poetry, the diaries of N. N. Punin, and others. Also of note are manuscripts of short stories written by Monas as an undergraduate at Princeton in the late 1940s.

The papers also contain many reprints of academic journal articles (sometimes annotated by Monas or inscribed by colleagues) on topics of Slavic literature, poetry, and history. These materials were collected over the course of Monas’ research, translation work, and editorship with the Slavic Review. Similarly, there are a number of photocopied book chapters, primarily in Russian and English.

Correspondence consists of mostly professional and occasionally personal letters and printed e-mails with colleagues in the field of Slavic studies, graduate students, publishers, and family or friends. Professional correspondence is typically filed among article reprints (often those written by the major correspondents).
