Historical Note

White Man’s Union Associations, also known as White Men’s Primary Associations, were local political parties that were created after the Reconstruction in several Texas counties to allow white voters to control the outcome of elections in areas with large African-American and Latino populations. The groups exercised control of elections by nominating all county officials for the spring Democratic primary elections. While minority voters were still able to vote in the fall general elections, candidates supported by the White Men’s Associations had already won the earlier primaries, thus silencing black and Latino input into local elections.
