Abstract: The Swofford Studio Photographs consists of approximately 70 black and white photographic prints, primarily showing former Speaker of the House and Vice President John Nance Garner (1868-1967) on vacation in Uvalde and after his retirement from politics. Most images were photographed by Swofford Photo Studio, Uvalde, Texas.

Historical Note

The Swofford Photo Studio was based in Uvalde, Texas. In operation from 1932 until 1967, the studio was run by Thomas Wesley Swofford and Ruth Swofford.

Scope and Contents

The Swofford Studio Photographs consists of approximately 70 black and white photographic prints, primarily showing former Speaker of the House and Vice President John Nance Garner (1868-1967) on vacation in Uvalde and after his retirement from politics. The archive additionally includes images of the Garner House in Uvalde, Garner during hunting and fishing trips, and photographs of actor Will Rogers and Mariette (Ettie) Garner, John Nance Garner’s wife. A small number of photographs are hand colored. The majority of the photographs were taken by Swofford Studio, based in Uvalde, Texas; however, a small number of images are not stamped with the studio’s stamp and may be from other sources.
