Biographical Note

Photographer Neil Leifer began his career as a teenager, photographing professional sporting events including the 1958 NFL title game between the Giants and Baltimore Colts. Leifer soon joined the staff of Sports Illustrated, moving to Time magazine in 1978. Leifer is primarily known for his sports photography; he has photographed numerous sports and related personalities, including the Olympics, soccer, horse racing, baseball, football, boxing, and athletes. However, the photographer has also covered a variety of non-sporting events and personalities, including Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter; the Statue of Liberty centennial celebration; actors Burt Reynolds, Paul Newman, and Clint Eastwood; Pope John Paul II's visit to America; New York City Mayor Ed Koch; the Space Shuttle Columbia; and African wildlife. Leifer’s photographs have been widely published in national magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post, Look, LIFE, Newsweek, Time and Sports Illustrated.

Leifer began collecting the work of other photographers early in his career, trading prints with other photographers and eventually gathering a significant collection of work by fellow sports photographers as well as photographs by editorial, entertainment, fashion and art photographers.
