A Guide to the Passage to Power Collection
John Giannini began his career as an army combat photographer in Vietnam, where he served two tours of duty. He went on to cover major events worldwide for such publications as The New York Times, Life, Time, and Newsweek, as well as working for international photo agencies. He became the first Agence Press-France (APF) staff photographer to be based in China and continues to produce pieces for the video division of APF.
In addition to the documentary Passage to Power, Giannini produced ABC Nightline’s Taking the Beach and worked on other productions such as The Gates of Heaven, Where the Heart Roams, N is a Number, Julia Robinson and Hilbert’s Tenth Problem, and Taking the Long View: The Life of Shiing Shen Chern.

16mm sync rolls and original negative film and audio tape for the 1983 documentary with the working title Passage to Power. The film chronicles the first convention of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
