Donald Dilworth Brand was born to American missionary parents on March 6, 1905 in Chiclayo, Peru. In 1912, he moved with his family to a ranch in Valley Center, California just outside of San Diego. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he completed a B.A. in geography in 1929 and received his Ph.D. in 1933. Brand fostered an expertise in the anthropology and history of the American Southwest, Mexico, and Latin America, as well as an interest in climatology and meteorology. After graduate school, Brand worked for a short time as a researcher with the National Park Service.
Brand conducted research and taught courses in anthropology and geography at the University of California, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor before coming to the University of Texas in 1949 as the founding chairman of the Department of Geology. He worked as a visiting professor in Mexico City during World War II. Brand served as chairman of the Geology Department until 1960 and retired from UT in 1975.
Brand died in Austin, Texas on July 21, 1984.
