Biographical Note

Dr. Harlan Smith was director of the University of Texas McDonald Observatory for 26 years, until his retirement in 1989. A native of West Virginia, he earned his Ph.D. from Harvard before teaching at Yale for ten years. Smith joined the University of Texas faculty in 1963. He also served as chair of the UT Department of Astronomy for 15 years and oversaw a period of great expansion for the department. Smith was instrumental in the design and building of a 107-inch telescope that debuted at the McDonald Observatory in 1965 and was also a key contributor to the development of the 8.5-meter spectroscopic telescope.

Among his many professional contributions, Smith discovered the variability of quasars, the effects of solar wind on radio emissions from Jupiter, and the existence of certain variable stars called dwarf Cepheids. Smith died in Austin in 1991.

Scope and Contents

Far-reaching collection of Smith's professional papers, including correspondence, special projects, research files, travel, writing, teaching, grant proposals, telescope and observatory construction and development, and professional affiliations.
