J. Harry Bennett was born in Oelwein, Iowa on September 29, 1919 and grew up in California. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in history at the University of California at Los Angeles. Upon receiving his Ph.D. in September 1948, Bennett was hired as a professor of eighteenth-century British history for the Department of History at the University of Texas at Austin, where he continued to teach until his death on April 25, 1966.

The papers of J. Harry Bennett (1919-1966) document his life and academic career as a UT history professor and specialist in eighteenth-century British history. Included are personal and professional correspondence, student materials, course lecture notes, and research materials concerning the British West Indies (particularly slavery in Barbados and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, a British missionary organization). The papers also include materials related to Bennett's service on University committees and to the History Department, as well as scrapbooks, maps, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and photographs.
