Biographical Note

Educator and author Fred M. Bullard, 1901-1994, received his B. S. and M. S. in geology from the University of Oklahoma, and his PhD in 1928 from the University of Michigan. At the University of Texas at Austin (UT), he taught introductory courses in geology, a course in volcanology, and served as the geology department chairman from 1929 to 1937. In addition to UT, he taught as a visiting professor at several universities, including Columbia University and Vassar College.

In the late 1920s, Bullard first became interested in volcanoes while on a geological survey expedition in Alaska. Over the next several decades, he attended numerous symposiums and expeditions, traveled to a number of volcanic sites around the world, including Africa, Iceland, and Mexico, and worked as an assistant to prominent volcanologist Dr. T. A. Jaggar. Bullard’s years of research and expertise resulted in the publication of volcanoes called Volcanoes: in Theory, in History, in Eruption, which was later revised and republished as Volcanoes of the Earth.
