The Liz Sutherland Carpenter Distinguished Visiting Lectureship in the Humanities and Science was founded in 1983 by friends of Liz Carpenter who funded the endeavor through a benefit gala at the Paramount Theatre. On August 12, 1983, the UT System Board of Regents formally established the lectureship under the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. The lectureship began collaboration with the Texas Union Distinguished Speakers Committee in 1991.
Carpenter, a 1942 graduate of the UT College of Communication, was the former press secretary to Lady Bird Johnson before she later returned to Austin, Texas where she lived as an author and women’s rights activist until her death in 2010.
