Biographical Note

William H. Goetzmann was born on July 20, 1930 in Washington and raised in Houston, Texas. He obtained his Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University in 1957.

Goetzmann joined the History Department at the University of Texas at Austin in 1964 and founded a program (later developed into a department) in American Studies in 1967 for which he served as the director until 1980. Goetzmann recruited some of the first black professors to the College of Arts and Sciences and instituted the first women’s studies class at U.T. through the American Studies program.

Goetzmann’s academic work focused largely on the art and history of the American West. In 1967, he was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in History and the Francis Parkman Prize of the Society of American Historians for Exploration and Empire: The Explorer and Scientist in the Winning of the American West. In 1986, Goetzmann’s The West of the Imagination was adapted into a PBS documentary series of the same name.

Goetzmann retired from the faculty at U.T. in 2005. He died on September 7, 2010.

Scope and Contents

The William H. Goetzmann Papers comprise primarily the handwritten and typed manuscripts of Goetzmann’s books, The West of the Imagination, Beyond the Revolution (see Archivist’s note), New Lands, New Men: America and the Second Great Age of Discovery, The American Hegelians: An Intellectual Episode in the History of Western America, The Art of Exploration, and Sam Chamberlain, My Confession. Manuscripts also include the screenplay dramatizing Sam Chamberlain’s My Confession, and scripts for the 1986 PBS documentary series adaptation of West of the Imagination. The papers include copies of these manuscripts from multiple stages in the revision process, text and illustration proofs, some correspondence regarding revisions, and photograph and art reproduction permissions.

Also included in the papers are Goetzmann’s academic subject files, correspondence, course materials and student papers, as well as article copies, informational pamphlets, and research materials about Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The papers also contain photographic prints, slides, and CDs with image files related to West of the Imagination. The series of oversized material includes Goetzmann’s collection of U.S. map facsimiles and photostats, as well as West of the Imagination screenplay drafts and book illustration proofs.

Archivist's note:

Early manuscript drafts of what would become Beyond the Revolution: A History of American Thought from Paine to Pragmatism (2009) were titled by Goetzmann with the following iterations: Cosmotopia, Road to Cosmotopia, Ideas Make a Nation, Living in a Cosmopolitan Revolution, and Living in an Intellectual Revolution.
