Seth L. Wolitz is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies and the Department of French and Italian at the University of Texas at Austin. During his time at the university, he was heavily involved with the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, where he was named the Marie and Edwin Gale Chair of Judaic Studies in 1980. Wolitz arranged for prominent scholars in Jewish Studies to travel to UT and give lectures as part of the Gale Family Foundation Annual Lectureship in Jewish Studies.
Wolitz is the author of The Hidden Isaac Bashevis Singer, The Proustian Community, and Songs of Bernart de Ventadorn, as well as numerous articles on modern Yiddish literature and culture. Wolitz received his Ph.D. in French and Romance Languages at Yale University in 1965. Before coming to UT, he taught at the University of California at Berkeley and Hunter College, CUNY.

The Seth L. Wolitz Papers contain four linear feet of correspondence, event planning records, pamphlets, programs, audio-visual material, and other documents concerning Wolitz’s involvement with the Jewish Studies program at UT. The bulk of the collection is regarding the Gale Lectureship series from the years 1981 to 1998. Some general files on Jewish Studies program curriculum and other departmental events are also included. Audio-visual material is primarily audio cassette tapes and VHS recordings of Gale lecturers and Sephardic Music Festival performances by Flory Jagoda. Also of note are several small boxes of photographic slides of art reproductions related to Wolitz’s work on Marcel Proust.
