Biographical Note

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, politician Caleb Blood Smith (1808-1864) moved to Ohio in his youth and attended Cincinnati College followed by Miami University. He served as a member of the Indiana and United States House of Representatives and later as Secretary of the Interior under Abraham Lincoln beginning in 1861 and resigning in 1862 when he relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana due to health issues. Here, he was appointed Judge of the United States Court for the District of Indiana until his death.
