Historical Note

Established in 2004 as part of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) at the University of Texas at Austin was jointly created by the Women’s Resource Center and the GLBTA Agency with funding from the Student Services Fee Committee as a safe space and forum for women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and ally (LGBTQA) communities to explore issues relating to gender and sexuality through advocacy, outreach, and educational programs and events, as well as through the utilization of its library and resources. The GSC has not only been concerned with creating a safe space in which to explore these issues, but also with facilitating the development of a safer and more supportive environment for women and LGBTQA communities on UT’s campus. By challenging gender stereotypes, violence, and discrimination, while underscoring the importance of providing services to people of all genders and opportunities to be involved in the furtherance social justice, the GSC is thus both a site of engagement and education.

Originally housed in the Student Services Building, in 2011 the GSC moved to the Student Activity Center, where it continues to coordinate and sponsor such programming events as the Feminist Action Project, National Young Women’s Day of Action, Peers for Pride, and Lavender Graduation -- a special graduation ceremony that recognizes and honors LGBTQA students. The GSC also subsumed many of the activities of Safe Space, a program within the residence halls for women and LGBTQA students. The GSC has supported annual productions of The Vagina Monologues and hosted a number of workshops and programs that include the GSC Mentorship Program, Living with Pride, Transgender Day of Remembrance, the Gender Performance Workshop, as well as other training programs and workshops concerning LGBTQA issues. The GSC has also been involved in such initiatives as research on gender-neutral restrooms on UT’s campus and transgender training to aid in the development of programs and workshops. In 2011, the center hosted a dedication open house to honor the renaming of its library after the late Ana Sisnett. The library, which consists of both printed material and DVDs on myriad topics relating gender and sexuality, complements the GSC’s online resources on feminism, LGBTQ history, and ways to challenge heterosexism and homophobia, among other topics. The GSC also publishes the newsletter Luminaria, which discusses women’s experiences at UT Austin.

Scope and Contents

Comprising correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, notes, evaluations, newspaper clippings, programs, posters, financial records, reports, printed material, and ephemera, the UT Gender and Sexuality Center Records, 1992-2012, undated, chronicle the GSC's establishment and development as a center and safe space for women and LGBTQA communities at the University of Texas at Austin. Administrative files include correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, financial records, and notes that document not only the GSC’s creation of and involvement in such events and programs as UT’s production of The Vagina Monologues, the Gloria Anzaldúa memorial tribute, the construction of UT’s Barbara Jordan statue, Lavender Graduation, Peers for Pride, and the dedication of the Ana Sisnett Library, but also the activities of various committees and Ixchel Rosal as director of the GSC. Program material consists of flyers, brochures, posters, and ephemera concerning programs and events, while evaluations relate to the GSC’s systematic efforts to gather feedback and programming development. Additionally, the collection includes copies of the GSC’s annual reports.

In addition to administrative and programming files, the collection contains a plethora of resource material: newspaper clippings consist of articles from both the Daily Texan and other publications on LGBTQA issues, gender and sexuality, homophobia in the news, and the GSC; a collection of zines concern feminism, LGBTQA issues, sexuality, and reproductive rights, among other subjects; published articles, guides, and manuals utilized by the GSC and the Safe Space program in the UT Austin residence halls address such topics as human rights, sexual orientation, and creating safe and supportive environments for women and LGBTQA students; and lastly, surveys and other materials relate to research on gender-neutral restrooms on campus.
