Louis Filler (1911-1998) was a professor of American studies at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio from 1953 until his death. Filler earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University in 1934. He was awarded a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1941; in 1943 he earned his Ph.D from Columbia. Filler began teaching at Antioch College in 1953 as a professor of American civilization. In 1976, he was made Distinguished University Professor of American Culture and Society. He also served as a Fulbright Scholar from 1979-1980 at the University of Erlangen in Germany. Filler’s research topics included American Liberalism, reform, abolitionism, and American Conservatism. Filler died in 1998 in Austin, Texas.
Correspondence, manuscripts, schedule books, microfilm, and research files comprise the Louis Filler Papers, 1944-1993, and undated. Filler’s Dictionary of American Conservatism and Dictionary of Social Change are represented in research files, manuscripts, and publishing proofs. Filler’s tenure at Antioch College is especially documented.
