Biographical Note

Karen Dickey moved from Tempe, Arizona to Austin, Texas in 1977, after studying photography at Arizona State University. She worked under the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) from about 1980 to 1999, forming working relationships with Commissioners Jim Hightower and Rick Perry in the process. During this time she traveled throughout the state documenting farms, farmers, agribusiness, and political events. She was also a member of the local chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers.

A dedicated animal rescue advocate, she became involved with the Texas Snow Monkey Sanctuary in the late 1980s and produced a large body of work focusing on the monkeys.

After 1999 she worked independently, on a freelance basis for local individuals and businesses, as well as for the Farm Credit Bank of Texas, providing photographs for their magazine, Landscapes. In the early 2000s, drawing from her continued interest in and experience with food gained through the TDA, she worked with the website FoodHawk.com, contributing photos of local restaurants.

During the last few years of her life, she spent time photographing in Costa Rica. She died there on August 21, 2010, of an apparent stroke.

Scope and Contents

The archive spans both the personal and professional photography of Karen Dickey. The bulk of the archive features Dickey’s work under the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), her employer for nearly twenty years. This work documents agricultural business in the state, and also includes editorial and studio-based work for the Department’s publications. Political coverage includes photographs of Commissioners Jim Hightower and Rick Perry, Governor Ann Richards, Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Ralph Nader, as well as political rallies in Austin, and the Farm Aid II music festival. Personal work includes dogs, wildlife, plants and flowers, and musicians photographed at the Armadillo World Headquarters. A body of work representing the Texas Snow Monkey Sanctuary in Dilley, Texas (known as Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary as of 2012) includes select images used to promote a National Geographic documentary about the site in 1997. Later freelance work includes portraits, architectural studies, and garden photography commissioned in Austin, and food and restaurant photography for the FoodHawk website. Finally there is a body of personal digital work made in Costa Rica.

The archive includes slides, negatives, and prints from Dickey’s career, primarily in 35 mm format with material in both black and white and color, with some digital prints. Digital materials include JPEG, TIFF and Adobe Photoshop (.psd) files. Earlier work in these formats is stored on CDs burned by Dickey, with later born-digital work and digital versions of earlier photographs stored on the hard drive. Print material includes tearsheets of Dickey’s work in publications, TDA periodicals and pamphlets, Jim Hightower promotional material, and personal correspondence.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged by format into six series. Series I, II and IV are further arranged into subseries by subject.
  • I. Subject files, includes prints, negatives, and non-photographic material, circa 1970-2003
  • II. Slides, circa 1970-2000
  • III. Photograph albums, circa 1980-2000
  • IV. Oversize prints, circa 1970-2000
  • V. Non-photographic materials, 1988-2005
  • VI. Digital materials, circa 2000-2010
Series I: Negatives, prints, and non-photographic materials. The files are largely Dickey’s work for hire, concentrated in the 1990s and 2000s, for the TDA, individuals and businesses, as well as personal work. The files are arranged by identified subject. Series II: Slides aggregated by general subject, including professional and personal work. Series III: Albums of professional work kept by the creator. Series IV: Unfiled photographic prints, mostly oversized, including a series of photographs of musicians, probably at the Armadillo World Headquarters. Series V: Non-photographic materials, including a portfolio of publications and tearsheets featuring Dickey’s published photographic work, materials created by Dickey to promote her freelance work, and financial records. Series VI: The digital storage components of the collection, with CDs separated from subject files and a hard drive containing born-digital and scanned image files.
