Biographical NoteBorn in Gatesville, Texas, in 1915, R. L. “Hoppy” Hopson joined the U. S. Navy two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor as a specialist with the V-Mail program. He served in North Africa, Italy, and the Pacific, and then studied photography before being discharged at war’s end. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsConsisting of diaries, photographs, and printed materials, the R. L. “Hoppy” Hopson Papers, 1941-1945, document Hopson’s service in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Diaries cover Hopson’s life in 1943 and 1944, while printed materials include a Navy seaman’s manual, a promotional manual for the Navy, a map of North Africa as well as a mechanical guide to flag signals.
