Biographical/Historical NoteWilliam Adolphus Smith was a resident of Carroll County, Virginia. He became a second lieutenant in the 50th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Company J and was captured as a prisoner of war in Spotsylvania, Virginia on May 12, 1864. Smith was in a convalescent home in early 1865 before being released on June 6, 1865 after taking an Oath of Allegiance to the United States at Fort Delaware.
