Founded in 1970, the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs is a graduate school
at the University of Texas at Austin. Offering degrees of Masters of Public Affairs
(MPAff), Masters of Global Policy Studies (MPGS), and a PhD in Public Policy, the
school prepares students for leadership roles in governmental and non-governmental
organizations in the private and non-private sectors. Commencement speakers have
included former Texas Governor Ann Richards, 41st U.S. President George H. W. Bush,
and American journalist Bill Moyers.

Articles, correspondence, speeches, photographs, videocassettes, and CDs/DVDs
comprise the UT Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs Records, 1974-2009,
documenting the “Character Above All” lecture series and the career of Barbara
Jordan. The “Character Above All” lecture series, sponsored by the LBJ School of
Public Affairs was conceived by Robert Wilson, a Dallas-based communications
consultant, and was recorded in Austin, Texas in the Bass Lecture Hall. The series
examines the character and leadership of presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to
George H. W. Bush. Documents pertaining to Barbara Jordan were assembled by Max
Sherman during his tenure at the school and used for research on the book he edited
about Jordan entitled Barbara Jordan: Speaking the Truth with
Eloquent Thunder.
