James Webb Throckmorton (1825-1894) was Governor of Texas during Reconstruction
(1866-1867) and a Democratic politician, elected to represent the Texas 20th
Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1875 to 1879 and
1883 to 1889.

Papers, 1838-1888, documenting Throckmorton’s service as the Governor of Texas and
as a U.S. Representative. The collection includes a letter from J.D. Giddings to
Gov. Throckmorton regarding the issue of slavery and reconstruction: “I fear too
late to save the South from Negro supremacy,” September 20, 1867.
