Biographical Note

Born in Weatherford, Texas, Lorena Baker (1897-1990) graduated with a BS in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1933, and was head of the Loan department at the University of Texas library for forty years. She was the author of Spanish Architecture in the Southwest; A Bibliography, (1933) and Call Number and Book Arrangement Manual: For Clerical Assistants in the University of Texas Library (1967).

Correspondence, a graduation diploma, a membership certificate, pamphlets, flyers, programs, and newsletters comprise the Lorena Baker Papers, 1947-1989, documenting her career as a librarian, her political concerns, and personal matters. Correspondence, December 18, 1947-April 7, 1989, is from friends, colleagues, and politicians concerning familial affairs, letters of thank you and congratulations, and governmental issues such as increasing teacher retirement pensions, foreign aid, tax policy, and welfare. A diploma is from Baker’s graduation from the University of Illinois in 1933. Received in 1944, a certificate certifies Baker as a member of the United States Citizens Service Corps. The collection also includes pamphlets, flyers, programs, and newsletters (1971-1981) from educational and religious organizations.
